trail. >> reporter: gop white house hopeful mitt romney is delivering a major foreign policy speech at virginia military institute. he says president obama makes foreign policy decisions based on game plank. he also questions the president's leadership on challenges in the middle east saying, i know the president hopes for a safer freer and more prosperous middle east ally with the united states. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. polls show president obama still doing better than the challenger on national security and foreign policy. his campaign is already pushing back hard. this new ad mocks romney's july overseas trips and his response to the deadly attack on the embassy in libya. >> if this is how he handles the world now think what he might do as president.

>> reporter: the president is at a star-studded fundraiser in hollywood last night, he made his first public comments about his debate performance. >> everybody here is incredible professionals. >> reporter: the president and mitt romney will face foreign policy questions in the next debate in eight days. cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> the president what is near bakersfield this afternoon for a dedication ceremony where cesar chavez's home is being made into a national monument. president obama is expected to arrive in the bay area in less than two hours and will go to two fundraisers in san francisco. antiwar protestors had greet him. the president of alaska airlines is hoping for a partial solution any minute now to computer problems causing system wise flight delays. but all three major bay area airports are reporting no delays. it started about 4 hours ago. alaska hopes for a full resolution by 5 p.m. the computer problem stems from

a data outage in the midwest. alaska runs an average of more than 450 flights a day. crews are cleaning up after 200 "occupy" oakland protestors broke windows and splashed paint last night. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington has the story. >> it makes me angry because oakland has enough problems. >> reporter: people who live and work in oakland are frustrated seeing downtown trashed again. >> this is absolutely ridiculous. >> protestors went on a vandalism spree last night breaking windows. >> why would you do this now? >> we have an opposition protesting in the right way we shouldn't ever act in violence. >> reporter: this start as an antiwar protest. a group of about 200 met for a rally to mark the 11th

anniversary of the war in afghanistan. demonstrators marched from frank ogawa plaza and around 8:30 dispersed some taking out their anger in destructive ways. city hall is boarded up covering broken windows. also three banks, offices for kaiser permanente, a.c. transit and another building on 20th and broadway. rose works in the same building. >> very disappointing. i understand we have political arguments and opinions. that's what america is about. but this doesn't help anybody. >> reporter: nobody was hurt and police made no arrests. now it's about cleaning up. a cost to businesses and taxpayers who will foot the bill for repairs at city hall but some say the city's reputation is paying the highest price. >> it's kind of tarnishes's oakland's reputation in the bay area and nationally. >> reporter: to give you an idea of the expense this bank alone needs to replace 15 windows at about $2,000 per

window, they are looking at a $30,000 bill. in oakland, elissa harrington, cbs 5. police in the east bay want to know who killed a teacher at her home. susie ko was found dead in her hercules home after she failed to pick her husband up at the airport. police say she was killed between 7 and 10:00 at her home and then stole her blue subaru. >> she felt very comfortable here working and doing landscaping. i can only imagine somebody noticing that pattern and wanting to take advantage of that. >> the victim's children are now using social media to try to help police with their investigation. so far, they have about 140,000 followers on facebook. a grisly discovery in east oakland. police say a decomposing body wrapped in cloth was found last night inside a car near the

intersection of ritchie and olive next to the arroyo viejo rec center in oakland's eastmont neighborhood. police say the body appears to have been there for some time. investigators are not sure yet whether this is a homicide. two bay area lawmakers are protesting a move by the state public utilities commission regarding the san bruno explosion and fire. san mateo assemblyman jerry hill and san bruno mayor jim ruane want a judge to reject the puc's request to suspend the pipeline hearings over pg&e's penalties. the lawmakers argue putting the hearings on hold until next month would allow pg&e to negotiate settlements behind closed doors and avoid public scrutiny. a coalition of community groups in san jose is boycotting the bay area's largest latino grocery chain. mi pueblo is facing criticism over its decision to implement everify immigration screening in its application process. the grocery franchise claims it's receiving pressure from the department of homeland security to assess the legal

status of its employees. according to the "l.a. times," a spokesman from homeland security says the agency does not force employers to use its everify program. senator dianne feinstein is taking action against rising california gas prices. she is calling for a federal suppression into gas prices because she doesn't think -- a federal investigation into gas prices because she doesn't think they are related to supply and demand. california is paying the highest gas prices averaging $4.67 a gallon. as you can see, they are higher than that. yesterday, governor brown ordered state smog regulators to allow winter blend gas to be sold three weeks early. and remember, the cheapest gas in your neighborhood, you can find it at cbssf.com/gas. and then enter your zip code. there's been an arrest following a brawl that broke out among people attending two different wedding receptions in downtown philadelphia and it was all caught on video. police say a 26-year-old man is being charged with aggravated

twice as fast. professor at ucsf and mission bay has won the nobel prize in medicine. the committee announced the award this morning and they are excited about it. the bay area professor is shinya yamanaka, a native of japan. he and a british researcher won for their discovery that mature specialized cells in the body can be reprogrammed to become any kind of cell. the committee said the winners have shown that specialized cells can turn back the developmental clock under certain circumstances and also said the discoveries will provide new tools for scientists around the world. this morning, a colleaguof the bay area winner explained more about the significance. >> it's a major breakthrough because it removes some ethical issues using human embryonic stem cells and opens a new host of things that we can do and ways to understand human disease using these new stem cells that we couldn't even dream of before.
